One of the most puzzling things in the United States educational system is why most colleges do not offer a bachelor degree in law. In most colleges if you want to become a lawyer someday, you have to major in something else and then go on to get your actual law degree from an accredited law school. So what’s up with that?

A lot of the answers to this question are mostly speculation as this “restriction” isn’t clearly spelled out, especially when it isn’t standardized throughout the nation. So what you’re going to read is merely some educated guesses based on a few facts.

In the United States, to become a lawyer, you only have to do one thing. Pass your bar exam. A person can actually do this without having any formalized training or schooling whatsoever. That’s right. A person can walk in off the street, insist on being able to take a bar exam and if they pass, they’re legally allowed to practice law in whatever state they took the bar in. So, if you’re a self educated person and think you can pull this off, there is nothing legally preventing you from doing this.

Because of this simple fact and also because there is really so much involved in preparing to practice law, most colleges probably feel that they are ill equipped to prepare a person for doing this and still have that person take all the electives and other requirements that are needed to actually get a degree from that institution. Therefore, a bachelor degree in law is not offered.

Another reason may very well have to do with economics and politics. Because preparing for a career in law is so involved, special colleges have been set up specifically for this purpose. They’re called law schools. These schools charge a lot of money to get in. If regular colleges were to offer law degrees and actually prepared somebody for a career in law, there would be no need for law schools. Obviously, this would be an academic nightmare for the law schools themselves. When you start bringing politics into the mix, that’s when it becomes quite unlikely that a regular four year college is going to offer a comprehensive program for law and a bachelor degree to go along with it.

So, what does a person major in if they want to go on to be a lawyer someday? Well, most students major in political science. While this is by no means a requirement that they do so, it is probably the one degree that will best prepare them for a career in law because of the material that’s covered. Still, there are students who major in psychology and other disciplines, figuring that it doesn’t really matter since ultimately they have to go to a law school in order to prepare for their bar exam, which is what this all boils down to.

And it’s funny; with all the requirements we put on getting certified to practice law in this country, you’d think we’d have better lawyers than we do.

If you are looking for a degree that will really pay off and provide stability, look into a law degree. Whether you choose a Bachelor’s in criminal justice or a degree from a law school, there are exciting and stable degrees out there. It is expected that within the next decade, legal careers will increase over 10%.

If you are an adventurous, active individual that would like to serve and protect your community, a career in criminal justice may be for you. Police officers, highway patrol officers and detectives are an integral part of our society. These men and women enforce the laws to everyday citizens to ensure peace and safety in society. A Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice is necessary to enter the justice field at this level.

Studying for the LSAT (Law School Admissions Test) consumes most students’ lives in their undergraduate days. This important placement exam, much like the SAT, determines which law schools you will gain admittance to. This standardized multiple choice exam is only offered four times a year in designated testing centers.

Have you looked into the cost of a law degree? Your education could cost up to $100,000. That figure is enough to make some people think twice about their career ambitions. While the cost is quite high, the payout is just as large. Upon graduation, law students can expect from $70,000 and even more for an annual salary. With a small debt to income ratio, you would have your loan debt paid off in a few years.

Criminal lawyers will either defend or prosecute those that have been accused of committing a crime. If you are comfortable arguing your client’s position in a courtroom, you can become a litigator. If you would prefer to do the behind the scenes work for the case, you can still be on the trial team. If you prefer not to work with potentially dangerous individuals, civil law is also a great place to start. You would be able to work on all sorts of cases that involve breach of contract or wrong doing.

Real Estate law and business law are largely growing fields. There is always a need for an attorney to draft contracts and oversee negotiations. Every major corporation will consult with a lawyer on advertising legalities, contracts, and worker’s comp cases.

With all of the exams you will pass just to enter college and law school, you must pass the most important one of all to actually practice law with your degree after graduation. The bar exam is a six hour, 200 multiple choice question test that will determine whether or not you are certified to practice law in a certain state. Each state in our country has a different set of laws, and therefore requires a different bar exam to practice law within its borders.

There are many different facets of the law field. Whether you choose to be a defender, prosecutor, or work behind the scenes in an office, there are so many career opportunities available to you, which are even possible to attain from an online education. It is evident that law degree courses are strenuous, but if you have ever dreamed of becoming an attorney, now is the time!

An ABA accredited law school is any law school that has submitted a request to the American Bar Association and has received an accreditation. These law institutions have gone through and passed an extensive evaluation of several key factors, that provides those students interested in studying law an indication of whether the law institution has met or exceeded certain quality measures.

During the accrediting process, the American Bar Association evaluates each instructor and member of the faculty of the institution in question as to the quality of his or her knowledge and teaching capabilities. These instructors and faculty members must perform to the highest level of their ability. The ABA also evaluates the schools curriculum, their libraries, dorm room facilities and classrooms to assure that the facility meets a certain criteria. During the schools evaluation, the ABA also makes sure that each school can supply students with adequate financial resources to help them complete their education. Upon meeting or exceeding the in depth quality standards set forth by the ABA, the school will then become an ABA accredited law school.

There are currently 199 law institutions and schools that have met the accreditation process in the United States that can provide students a sound education in the legal field. It is important for students, considering to study law, to choose an ABA accredited law school for the simple fact that, perspective employers perceive a non-accredited school to lack a challenging curriculum which ultimately shows a lack in reputation for the student. Furthermore, attending a non-accredited school allows the student to sit for Bar Exams in the state of their particular school.

As a student, you are encouraged to examine each law institutions and universities of interests to insure that they are an ABA accredited. The choice you make can make a difference in your future.

Taking a law exam can be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be! The following tips will help you ace your law school exams.

1. Practice Spotting Legal Issues. There are generally four parts to a law exam: issue, rule, analysis/application, and conclusion (IRAC). Learning to spot legal issues is probably the most important thing you can do. After all, if you don’t know the issues, you won’t be able to write the rules, the analysis, or the conclusion!

How do you learn to spot legal issues? You know those bizarre fact patterns (hypos) that you read in law school? Well, reading those over and over again will help you spot legal issues! In fact, the more hypos you read, the better you’ll become at spotting legal issues, and when you only have an hour or less to write an essay, you have to be able to spot the issues fast!

Remember, you’ll earn points for every issue that you spot. To practice spotting legal issues, read fact patterns (hypos) and guess the potential issues. Do this repeatedly until you’re able to spot issues quickly.

2. Memorize the Rules. You’ve spotted the issues, now you need to state the rules/black letter law. You only have an hour or less to write each essay, so there’s no time to waste. Like issue spotting, you’ll earn points for stating the rules, so you want to state as many rules as possible. This is where memorizing the rules comes in!

To ace your law school exams, you have to state the rules fast, and in order to do that, you absolutely need to have the rules memorized! Study the rules consistently throughout the semester and start memorizing the rules about two weeks before your exam.

3. Take Practice Exams. You spotted the issues and stated the rules, now you need to write a legal analysis and conclusion. The conclusion will be a piece of cake, but the analysis is a little more complicated. The legal analysis is the why section of your essay, in other words, why will D (the defendant) be held liable for assault?

The best way to learn how to write a good analysis is to take practice exams. Taking practice exams will not only help you write a good essay, but will give you an idea of the type of questions you might encounter on your law school exam. Check your law library for past exams.

With so many study guides to choose from, choosing the right one can be difficult. If you’re preparing for law school exams, consider the answers to the following questions before you choose a law study guide.

1. How quickly can you spot legal issues? If I gave you a lengthy fact pattern and asked you what the issues were, would you be able to state the issues quickly or would you hesitate? If you would hesitate, spotting legal issues is likely one of your weaknesses, and is something that you should master before your next law exam.

To succeed in law school, you need to be able to spot issues fast. If you have trouble issue spotting, look for a study guide that is geared toward helping you spot legal issues. Some study guides contain fact patterns specifically written to help you spot issues quickly.

2. Can you state the rules fast? Do you know the law? Have you memorized the rules? If I asked you to state the rule for battery, would you be able to state the rule quickly? What about voluntary manslaughter? If I asked you to state the rule, would you hesitate? If you would hesitate, stating the rules is likely one of your weaknesses, and is something you should improve.

Keep in mind that memorizing the rules will not only help you state the rules fast, but will allow you to better analyze law questions. If you have trouble stating the rules quickly, select a study guide that is geared toward helping you memorize the rules. Some study guides contain condensed rule statements that are easy to memorize.

3. Are your essays well-organized? Are you able to write a well-organized essay, or are your essays disorganized and hard to follow? If your essays are disorganized, writing is one of your weaknesses, and it’s important that you improve your writing skills before your next law exam. If you have trouble writing a well-organized essay, choose a study guide that is geared toward helping you improve your legal writing skills.

In addition to study guides, one of the best ways to improve your writing skills is to take practice exams. Taking practice exams will not only help you write a good essay, but will give you an idea of the type of questions you might encounter on your law school exams. Check your law library for past exams.

Before I went to law school, I read a few of the common law school guides that most law students read. These guides promised me academic success as long as I followed the particular strategies that they described. I followed their advice for about half of my time at law school, and it’s a good thing I didn’t keep following it longer.

As I got wiser to the ways of law school, I realized that much of the advice given to law students is counterproductive. As I moved away from the advice found in mainstream law school guides, my grades, and more importantly my overall law school experience, improved markedly.

Towards the end of my the time at law school and even for some time after I graduated, my friends and I would discuss all the mistakes we had made by listening to the silly mainstream advice. We would often wonder out loud how this advice came to be, illogical and ineffective as much of it is.

Now that I know better after making many mistakes as a law student, I will share with you one common law school strategy that you should fervently avoid if you want to do your best in law school. Unsurprisingly, most law school guides encourage this exact strategy, to your academic, financial, and social detriment.

The strategy I am talking about is the use of hornbooks and commercial study aids to prepare for classes and exams. As a law student, you should do your best to avoid this common mistake, and here are a number of reasons why. First, studying from commercially prepared study aids is not an effective study strategy, because the material in these study aids differs from your course material. The way study aids present material will also differ from the way in which your professor wants you to approach and understand the course material. Contrary to popular belief, you can get all the information you need to do extremely well on exams from the casebook, relevant statutes, and class, without ever resorting to study aids. Furthermore, buying hornbooks multiplies the number of sources you feel that you must study, and will only make the learning process more confusing, frustrating, and ineffective.

Second, hornbooks and commercial study aids are expensive, and the cost of these aids adds up fast, especially if you believe that you need them for each of your classes. Being that these extraneous materials contain little, if anything, of value to your studies, you will do well to save your money for more worthwhile pursuits, such as vacations, electronics, or whatever it is that you like. And yes, the money you save on hornbooks can actually pay for a vacation, even a nice one.

Third, given that study aids have nothing to offer over the actual course materials in terms of valuable study material, they waste your time. Your time in law school is valuable, and you should try to be as efficient as possible by using that time to study the casebook and to relax. The less time you spend on useless study aids, the more time you will have for effective study and for relaxation, which will help you stay balanced and focused in law school, while avoiding burnout.

Finally, you should be aware that most professors are against the use of study aids (except those who write these aids), and they know what they’re talking about. Your professors were exceptional law students, and most of the time they know what they’re talking about when it comes to study strategy, so listen when they tell you that the most important information is in the casebook and statutory supplement, rather than in a commercial study aid.

Instead of wasting your time and money on hornbooks and commercial study aids, read your class materials and devote at least some of your free time to activities that you enjoy.

For an aspirant lawyer, willing to make it big in the legal profession, selection of the right school of law is critical. Getting into this type of school you want is not easy and finding it even harder. Thousands of law schools have sprouted all over the place and each claim to provide you with the best education. It is thus imperative that you carefully choose the law school. There are certain guidelines that you can consider while choosing a school of law. Caution and circumspection will go a long way in to ensuring that you have chosen the right school.

Let us take a look at the factors that need to be considered for selecting a school of law.

First, the faculty of the school is of premium importance. The quality of faculty is essentially equal to the quality of the students. You need to address a number of issues here. Find out whether the faculty is adequately diverse in terms of race, gender, experience, qualification and so on.

What is the faculty to student ratio? The higher the number of teachers to the students, the higher a student will get the attention. Are the teachers considered authorities in their respective fields or have they published papers on the subject? Does the law school invite enough visiting lecturers of eminence regularly? Try to answer these fundamental questions to evaluate the quality of faculty.

Second, find out how equipped is the library? Does the library have a rich collection of core law books, law reference books and journals and are these subscribed on a regular basis? Does it have internet connection and adequate number of personal computers that will facilitate intense research? Is the staff qualified enough to handle a library or in other words, is the staff certified? Find out this critical information about the library.

Third, find out the quality of the curriculum. All the law schools typically follow courses like contracts, criminal law, constitutional and property law, civil procedure, legal methods, along with writing, torts.

However, all law schools may not have programs that are suitable to your own needs and special requirements. In case you don’t happen to have specific study or area interests in your mind you can try to ensure that the school teaches a variety of electives so that you can choose from many.

The above factors need not necessarily ensure that you will get into the best law school ever made. However, the above are essential ingredients of a good law school and you do not have any option but to critically analyze whether the school of law in question actually has these capabilities. You may not be able to find the best law school but the law school you find will be a decent one at least.
